Royal Historical Society Library and Archive Collections

 

LIBRARY

The Society maintains a Library in its Council Chamber of over 1,000 volumes of historical scholarship, published between the mid-sixteenth century and the present day. Whilst it does not constitute a deliberately planned comprehensive collection, having been acquired piecemeal over the years by gift, bequest and purchase, volumes have accumulated from the Society's earliest years, acknowledging the historical basis of the Society's own scholarly undertakings. The collection is largely focused on British history and antiquities. Our Library holdings are listed below by chronological category and series type. Fellows and Members of the Society and interested members of the public may consult the Library holdings on appointment with the Society Office.

ARCHIVES

The Society has a limited archive collection, which includes the Minute Books and other papers of the Society, records of the Camden Society from 1838 until its amalgamation with the Royal Historical Society in 1897, the papers of two past Presidents, Sir George Prothero and Sir Geoffrey Elton, and other miscellaneous material acquired by gift and bequest. The archival collection is currently being catalogued and full details will be released as preparation of papers reaches completion.
